Climbing

Amidst the rocks

Pure exhilaration: the rock, concentration, muscle power and technique. Climbing requires a total effort, but at the end, you’re rewarded with a breathtaking view. Around Andermatt, you’ll find via ferratas, single- and multiple-rope routes.

Diavolo via ferrata

The Diavolo via ferrata affords unmatched views deep down into the Schöllenen Gorge. With a degree of difficulty of K2 to K3, it's ideal for the whole family, as well as for beginners. The approach can be reached from the Andermatt railway station in about 20 minutes and is located near the Devil’s Bridge and the Suvorow Monument. You’ll need to surmount 700 metres of cable, 265 iron pins and petons, artificial footholds and two ladders to reach the floor of the Tüfelstal at 1,860 metres above sea level. Here, you’ll find a resting spot where you can recover from the thrill-packed climb before taking hiking trails back to Andermatt.

Climbing

The south ridge of the Salbitschijen is considered Switzerland’s most beautiful granite ridge and is one of the most well-known climbing areas around Andermatt. You'll be rewarded with a 360° view of the slender Salbitnadel. You should plan on five to six hours for the 18 pitches on this challenging route (6a). In addition, the approach and descent will each take about an hour. Tip: To make this route feasible, we recommend overnighting in the Salbit Hut.

Mountain guides and gear

Climbing in the mountains is different from indoor climbing. Even for proficient climbers, it’s worthwhile hiring an experienced mountain guide for the first outing on the rocks. In Andermatt you can find them at Andermatt Guides, the Mammut Alpine School and at Peakdreams.

A variety of sport shops in Andermatt offer rental climbing gear: in Piazza Gottardo at Imholz Sport and in the village of Andermatt at Meyers Sporthaus and Alpina Sport.
