The Alpinist: Andermatt’s next landmark

A brisk walk through the heart of Andermatt Reuss reveals more than Alpine air and crisp horizons. Quietly rising against a backdrop of rugged mountains and shifting light is The Alpinist, a blend of five-star hospitality, forward-thinking design and thoughtful sustainability.

Scheduled for completion in December 2027, The Alpinist marks the latest stride in Andermatt’s transformation from mountain secret to international, design-led Alpine destination.

Conceived by Swiss architectural studios Nau2 and Holzer Kobler Architekturen, with interiors by the award-winning Norwegian practice Snøhetta, The Alpinist is much more than a hotel. It’s a cultivated basecamp, part sanctuary, part springboard. With 66 rooms and 164 serviced residences, it offers refuge for the weary ski tourer and inspiration for Alpine “bon vivants”.

Redefining Alpine Architecture

The building’s design is shaped by the dramatic layered landscape of Andermatt, from forest to tundra to glacier. These natural forms are reinterpreted through materials and atmospheres. Residents will relish timber and stone from the surrounding region, oak softened by time, slate that carries the mountain’s weight, and textiles in wool and felt that exude warmth and call out for comfort.

The interiors burst with authenticity: natural light floods open spaces, and rooms are subtly zoned for both social life and personal retreat. “The goal is not a grand gesture,” says Julia Lachner, Interior Lead at Snøhetta. “Rather, it’s about crafting a setting that feels lived in, elemental and somehow inevitable…like it was always meant to be here.”

Regeneration, Recovery, Relaxation

Andermatt has long drawn those who chase the first tracks on Gemsstock or cycle the Furka Pass at sunrise. The Alpinist meets them at both ends of the day. Its 2,300-square-metre spa is a retreat of its own, with a panoramic rooftop pool, steam and salt saunas, and a restorative Kneipp Garden.

For performance, there are precision-calibrated training facilities, and yoga and Pilates studios – all spaces designed for bodies that crave both endurance and recovery.

SNØHETTA: ALPINE ICONS WITH GLOBAL CREDENTIALS

Snøhetta is a transdisciplinary studio based in Norway, where architecture, landscape, interiors, product, graphic and digital design converge into holistic projects. Named after a Norwegian mountain, the practice has long embodied the spirit of encounters and exchange. Its international breakthrough came in 1989 with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Egypt, followed by landmarks including the Oslo Opera House and New York’s 9/11
Memorial Pavilion. Today, with projects spanning continents and disciplines, Snøhetta brings its global perspective and deep-rooted passion for the mountains to the Swiss Alps.

Design With Intension

Residences range from studio hideaways to multi-level penthouses, each serviced to exemplary hotel standards. Owners will enjoy 24-hour concierge, private dining, personal chefs and Alpine floristry. And a hotel rental programme will support those seeking return on their investment, although this is as much a lifestyle proposition as a financial one.

Sustainability runs as a thread throughout. The building’s facade features a bespoke solar skin, while heating is provided via a climate-neutral local system. “Architecture can frame a way of living,” says Snøhetta’s Marcus Baumann. “Here, it’s not about opulence, but light, space and serenity. The luxury of peace.”

A Place For People with Alpine Passion

Tom Rendell, Chief Marketing Officer of Andermatt Swiss Alps, sums up the ethos: “The Alpinist channels Andermatt’s dramatic Alpine character, rooted in sport and tradition, while embracing its role as a global destination. It’s where Alpine culture meets a modern outlook, a community united by a love of the mountains.”

And that, perhaps, is The Alpinist’s greatest allure. It’s destined to be a meeting place for a diverse international community who are drawn together by raw landscapes, changing weather and the unique energy of life lived at altitude.
